Aston Villa secured promotion back to the magnificent Premier League after goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn earned them a hard deserved 2-1 win over Derby in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley.
Aston Villa show the intend and were the better side from the start and for much of the game, taking the lead on the stroke of half-time through man of the match El Ghazi, before a howler from Derby ‘keeper Kelle Roos gifted them a second after the break. Jack Marriott’s goal for Derby county wasnt enough for Lampard led team as Dean Smith’s men held on to win the most lucrative game in football, earning a promotion to the epic English Premier League.
The result sees Villa bounce back into the top-flight at the third time of asking, avenging last season’s Play-Off Final defeat to Fulham, denying Derby boss Frank Lampard a fairytale end to his first season in management.
Smith, who admitted that he felt emotional when he saw his wife and children crying in the royal box as he walked up to lift the trophy, believes Villa will push on next season.
“It feels right that Villa are in the Premier League, the history and the size of the club, the fanbase that it has – I believe it is a Premier League club and that’s not me being a supporter.” He said.
But we’ve done some hard years trying to get back into the Premier League, we’ve fallen on hard times. Last season was very tough for everyone that went through defeat here against Fulham
