Celebrated Actress Lupita Nyong’o took to her social media pages on Mashujaa Day to celebrate and honor fallen Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop, who was found dead in her bedroom in Iten.
”On this #MashujaaDay, I’m honoring Agnes Tirop. Just months ago, we celebrated Agnes as she represented Kenya at the Olympics. Now, we tragically mourn her utterly senseless death. Sending my deep condolences, love and strength to her loved ones.” She tweeted.
Tirop, a long and middle-distance runner who represented the country at the just concluded Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing fourth in the final died as a result of a stab on the neck, this is according to an autopsy conducted. Her husband, Ibrahim Rotich has already been arraigned on suspicion of her murder before the court.
Just last month, the fast rising athlete broke the 10km world record in Germany, crossing the line in 30:01, 28 seconds faster than the previous record, set by Morocco’s Asmae Leghzaoui in 2002.
In a message of condolence and comfort to the family, friends, relatives, and the athletics fraternity, President Kenyatta mourned Agnes as a Kenyan hero and champion whose death is a big blow to the country’s sporting ambitions and profile.
“It is unsettling, utterly unfortunate and very sad that we’ve lost a young and promising athlete who, at a young age of 25 years, she had brought our country so much glory through her exploits on the global athletics stage including in this year’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she was part of the Kenyan team in Japan,” the President eulogised.
The president urged law enforcement agencies led by the National Police Service to track down and apprehend the criminals responsible for the killing of Agnes so that they can face the full force of the law.
