False start as Kenya’s Harambee Stars falls to Algeria at Afcon

Harambee Stars begun their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on a wrong footing after going down 2-0 to Algeria at the 30 June Stadium Egypt in their opening Group C match.

This was Stars’ first appearance in the competition in 15 years and Sebastien Migne’s men were looking to extend the superb run of form they had in the qualifiers and preparation friendlies into the continental showpiece, first-half goals from Baghdad Bounedjah and an own goal by Abud Omar was enough to put stars in a quagmire position.

Bounedjah sent Patrick Matasi the wrong way to open the scoring for the Desert Foxes via a penalty kick, minutes later,  Abud Omar unfortunately directed Riyard Mahrez’s striker to his own net to gift the North Africans their second goal.

The Desert Foxes started were the favourite going into the game and they didn’t disappoint, putting stars in a very unfamiliar territory.
Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez and Galatasaray forward Sofiane Fegouli pace and tactics forced early bookings for Stars’ pair Aboud Omar and Philemon Otieno.

Harambee Stars will face Tanzania who suffered a 2-0 defeat to Senegal in their next fixture, before clashing with Senegal in the last group C match. Algeria and Senegal jointly top Group C with 3 points each, with a goal difference of two each.
