House Speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned this Tuesday, leaving his deputy in charge untill the new House speaker is elected in a move that indicate a fierce tussle in the city hall.
Her unexpected move comes after months of wrangles at the Assembly that saw MCAs divided into factions, with some in her support and a majority opposed to her leadership.
While announcing her resignation, Ms Beatrice Elachi cited threats to her life and that of her family among the reasons for stepping down, squarely blaming it on Governor Sonko who she accused of undermining her.
She added she was governor’s Sonko biggest stumbling block and now that she was out, she prays for thebut for him focus on God, serve Nairobians and stop threatening peoples lives because its not helpful.
The embattled speaker in her speech thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving her the opportunity to serve Nairobians for the last three years, hoping hoped to serve in the president’s administration in any other capacity in future.
“I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenya. For the last few days there have been life threatening incidences. I appoint my deputy speaker, John Kamangu as acting speaker.” She said.
Prior to her resignation, a section of MCA’s allied to governor Sonko have been reportedly having secret meetings to plan on how Elachi should be thrown out of the House via the impeachment.
“We are disturbed by her style of leadership. How can a whole Speaker be working with Minority Whip and forgets to consult other leaders like Majority whip,” said a City MCA who sought anonymity.
