High level security team led by the Secretary of Internal Security and RDU and GSU Commandants have been dispatched to the North Rift to join the regional security team in the ongoing operation to flush out criminals who have been conducting banditry attacks and other criminal acts in six counties in the area.
Through a press statement released by the Ministry of Interior and Coordination, the government said it was deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of security in the North Rift region, appointing out Baringo, West Pokot, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana and Laikipia counties as areas most affected as a result of cattle rustling and other criminal acts over the past two months.
The Government also condemned the incitement to violence and illegal possession of firearms, which have seen an escalation of inter communal attacks leading to maiming, loss of lives, destruction of property and livelihoods.
These persistent elements of misconduct, the government said have contributed to instability in the region, prompting the government to take necessary action to salvage the situation.
“In this regard, a high level security team comprising the Secretary of Internal security, GSU Commandant and the RDU commandant has been dispatched to the area as a precursor of stiff measures set to be undertaken to curb further escalation of the sad state if affairs. The three will join Rift valley regional security team to reinforce operational responses and lead firm action against criminal elements in the area with a view to bringing those culpable to justice” Read part of the statement.
